2010 AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CIVIL ENGINEERS
OUTSTANDING LARGE PROJECT AND REGION 9 OUTSTANDING ENERGY PROJECT.

Contained within a footprint less than half the size of conventional construction, the new Trans Bay Converter Stations serve the San Francisco City Center with power produced and transmitted via direct current 53 miles under the bay.

The challenges of the small site constraints included existing soil contamination, surrounding developments, location of existing points of connection for utilities, flood plain issues, and storm water design. Carlton’s timely design, engineering, and multiple agency processing assistance were vital in helping meet the project schedule milestones.

Carlton Engineering provided structural engineering, civil engineering, architecture, and site landscaping design of the converter buildings at each end of this transmission link. Carlton also provided Resident Engineer services during the construction of both converter stations.
